What are Music competitions like?

This just for future reference (JUST learning cello). I've never been to a music competition nor any outing with people I know. So I don't have that much social experience...anyway I'm wondering what it's like at a competition. Fun, nervous, scary, judgmental, and so on. I should also mention I get nervous when I'm in front of people (really nervous).
